Hee hee. I did line up all three covers and put it on the signature of me email. That was my very first thought.
I’ll post that here in a few days. Got to spread out my blog posts a bit. I’m not so great at coming up with material. LOL
It looks so realistic. The chainmail is fantastic. Shouldn’t Achan have sort of longer, medievalish hair, though?? I’m not sure how similar his features are to the 1st book cover … His nose needs to be bigger, and his brows more pronounced. The head shape is somewhat different between the two depictions. The first guy has a longer face, bigger nose, and bigger brow. And a much taller head. Which is why Chris fit the role so well; that’s his face structure. If it’s not too late to change Achan’s face, I have many good photos of Chris dressed as Achan that might be helpful … And Achan’s hands aren’t quite as big or manly as they were on the first cover.
Vrell, on the other hand, is great! 😀 I can see a resemblance between TDF’s cover and her in this one. She looks even better here, though. Maybe it’s the dress … =)
I hope this is constructive criticism and isn’t too late, lol
Thanks for the feedback, Adele. I hear you. The thing is, authors don’t get to make these kinds of suggestions on the cover. It’s all up to the publisher and artist to work that out. You get what you get, and I’ve been really blessed with my covers. The author can give suggestions before the work is done. And afterwards, the author can ask for a change if it’s necessary and not a lot of work. For example, on book two, Vrell was a blonde girl. So I asked if the artist could make her hair brown, and he did that for me.
What’s funny is, this is the same model from book one. Yes, he has gotten a haircut since 2008, but it’s him. He is two years older since he posed for book one, where in the books, only six months have passed. Yes, Achan has long hair and a ponytail. But oh well. I did love Chris as Achan. He looked fabulous. I printed a few posters of Chris and you all that I’ll use when I talk at schools. 🙂
I don’t think Vrell is the same model as the girl on book two, since the girl on book two was blonde… *shrugs* Maybe she’s is. I dunno. It’s a mystery. I love her dress too. 🙂
Awesome cover Jill! I can’t wait to read the book!
Also, idk if this is fixable or not, but Achan looks 30 not 16/17. I’m 16 myself, so I would know. 😉
Also, his hair is a little shorter than you described Achan’s being. That guy can’t pull his hair back into a ponytail. LOL
Also, from an artists standpoint, a teen beard would be mostly on the chin (again, I have a teen beard so I would know LOL) and not between the mustache and the chin. It might even look more teenish if the mustache was clear.
Overall, to someone who doesn’t know what Achan looks like it is awesome. Only, since it is the third book, most people already know what Achan looks like. lol
Leighton,
Yeah, he does look much older than 16. He probably is. He’s the same model from book one, so he’s two years older and Achan is only six months older. There isn’t anything I can do about that. And he was a good sport growing his beard just for my book, so we’ll just say that Kinsmen have great facial hair growth… LOL
I suppose there is still time to write in a scene where Achan chops off his hair for some reason. Then the short hair would fit the story. The pose he is in fits a scene at the end. Ooh. An idea is coming to me now… It might work. I’ll ask Jeff what he thinks about it. You’ve got my mind spinning now, Leighton. Thanks! 🙂
GAH! I keep forgetting to check your site….Absolutely pumped. EPIC cover! 😀 Four months before Darkness breaks! I shall be counting down. Is it available for preorder yet? >_>
(In case ye didn’t notice by now 😉 I’m pretty much a fanatic of the Blood of Kings. I re-read them just this past week. Epic. Purely epic.)
Alas, each book has “released” on April 1, but that just means it’s the first day you can buy it, not actually hold it in your hands. So, yes, I guess it is an April Fool’s Day release date. Sigh.
Wow achan sure grew up fast. 😀 I love Vrell very pretty. I thought Vrell had black hair? Doesn’t achan have black hair too? oh well. LOOKS GREAT! can’t wait…(haha that rhymed…sorta). I’m so excited!I can’t believe that’s the same model 🙂
Can’t wait,
Leanne

I have a question how do you pronounce Achan’s name. Is it how it’s spelled or Akan?
novelteen says
It’s Ay-kan. Here is a link to a post where I linked to someone saying many of my terms aloud in Hebrew. Achan sounds like a bad cough. LOL
http://jillwilliamson.wordpress.com/2010/08/17/how-to-pronounce-certain-names-in-by-darkness-hid/
Despite the bad cough pronounciation, I always say Ay-kan.

Hey, do you mind if I post the artwork on my blog? I am putting together a blog post of upcoming books and I wondered if ye would mind…

Not at all, Jake. You can post the artwork anywhere you want. 🙂
Thanks!
