5 Realms
There are five realms in the Kinsman Chronicles. Three patriarchies and two matriarchies. These two sides do not get along. Armania, Sarikar, and Rurekau make up the father realms, while Magonia and Tenma comprise the mother realms. This was not always the case and happened just over one hundred years ago. Take this excerpt from A History of the Five Realms by Pontiff Vremmel Gerke, House Hadar 806:
“In the 760th year of House Hadar’s reign, the disciples of Lady Omari Gasta split off from Armania in what later became known as the Great Parting. King Nathek Hadar had outlawed magic, but to Magon’s disciples, magic was the next step in the development of humankind. Patriarchy had become archaic. Let the best man or woman rule, they decreed. Gender does not give value, nor is magic evil in and of itself. They formed the nation of Magonia in the east and built shrines and temples to the goddesses they worshipped.
“But the people of Magonia quickly became divided. There was little food and many disagreements over politics and the treatment of men—especially male mantics. A series of murders sparked a civil war, which ended with the nation of Magonia dividing in two. Those with a more aggressive view on mantics seceded to northern lands with Lady Omari and founded the nation of Tenma, who set their minds on becoming the most powerful nation in Sh’Kan. And so the mother tribes have been rebelling against House Hadar to this day.”
Armania
The nation of Armania is the oldest in the Five Realms, and long ago was the only nation. Armania occupies the north-western coast of the Five Realms. It is ruled by Echad Hadar, an old, sickly king who allows superstitions to guide his choices. Armania practices the Rôb, which is a faith that reveres multiple gods, though most followers choose five gods to follow faithfully. Armania is a desert land, similar to that of Arizona. Its chief exports are wine and goats. It’s colors are blue and brown. The flag once bared an image of Nesher, the sunbird manifestation of Arman until King Echad changed the flag to depict an image of Barthos, god of soil, when he became king in 848.
Sarikar
Sarikar is the second oldest nation in the Five Realms. It occupies the western coast and has a geography and high desert climate similar to that of eastern Oregon and northern Utah. Sarikar is ruled by the Piney family. The current king, Jorger Pitney, is known as The God’s King. Sarikar split off from Armania centuries ago due to religious differences. As a nation, they are Armanites, who are people that believe in Arman as The God–the only god. Their main export is wood and ships. Because of their forests, they are the richest nation in the Five Realms. Their colors are green and brown, and their flag bears an image of the evergold tree.
Rurekau
The nation of Rurekau occupies the northern coast of the Five Realms and reaches south into the center of the land. It is ruled by Emperor Nazer Orsona, and has a climate and landscape similar to that of northern Africa. Rurekans follow the Sheresh faith, which is a sect of Rôb that believes that man is the head of all things–that even the gods serve man. Their chief export is sand for bricks or arenas. They also have a strong slave market. Their colors are gold and brown, and their flag depicts a fang cat.
Magonia
Magonia occupies the south eastern area of the Five Realms and is home to the four great lakes–the only freshwater lakes in the entire land. The older of the two mother realms, they are ruled by a nomadic chieftess. They are a people who follow the Kabaran religion, which worships black spirits and the evenroot plant, which enables the magic of mantics. This magic is a part of everyday life in Magonia, and the realm exports both the magic-inducing evenroot tuber, evenroot powder, and evenroot juice. They also sell a large number of trained mantic slavs to Rurekau. While they mostly keep to themselves, the current chieftess, Mreegan, believes that the time has come for an old prophecy to be fulfilled that will make Magonia the ruler of all nations. Their climate is similar to that of India’s Thar Desert. Their colors are red and black. Their flag depicts the Kabaran hands, one set over the other in a partnership between mantic and black spirit.
Tenma
Tenma sits on the north eastern coast of the Five Realms. This mother realm split off from Magonia because it sought power that Magonia had no interest in pursuing. The realm is ruled by ten high priestesses, the first of which is High Queen Tahmina. Men are an oppressed minority in Tenma, where the birth of males is heavily regulated. Only females can be trained as mantics in Tenma. As in Magonia, Tennish people follow the Kabaran faith. Their chief export is gemstones and coal. Their national color is white, which symbolizes the purity of the mantic woman. Their flag depicts a letaha newt, which feed off evenroot tubers.
