Hi Novelteen gang! Heather here.
Merry Christmas!
Is it too early to say that? Nah. I throw in a “Merry Christmas” whenever I get the chance! I realize “Happy Holidays” is a bit more politically correct. But I have a smidgen of a problem with that. To me, the holiday is all about Christmas. Trying to remove the “Christmas” aspect of winter holiday, is a bit like trying to hide an elephant by putting a lamp shade on its head. I don’t decorate a holiday tree. I decorate a Christmas tree. I don’t buy holiday presents. I buy Christmas presents. I don’t have a holiday eve party. I have a Christmas Eve party. And we don’t open gifts on holiday morning, we open them on Christmas morning. So why would I go around spouting Happy Holiday, when what I really mean is… Merry Christmas.
I know some say the term Merry Christmas is offensive. I mean, at least that’s what I’ve been told. I’ve actually never had someone tell me they were offended by my cheery, toothy smile and encouragement to have a Merry Christmas. Truly, with as many times as I say it every year, you’d think someone, anyone would have mentioned their offense. I’d quickly apologize and tell them to have an amazing day. But, so far nada.
Merry Christmas isn’t designed to offend anyone. It’s a seasonal greeting meant to remind us that we live in a Christian nation where many have died to give us the right to celebrate–or not celebrate–Christmas. It’s our freedom. And I’m glad I have it. At the same time, I’d never even think of being offended by someone wishing me a happy day on whatever religious holiday they choose. I don’t have to be that religion to reap the benefits of a happy day.
I just don’t feel like we should be scared to say Merry Christmas. And folks of other religions (I mean, seriously, not everyone who celebrates Christmas is a Christian anyway) should be free to say whatever greeting is associated with their holidays. Personally, I’d like to hear more. I’m a word person, so greetings are golden to me.
