It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with drawing maps for the storyworlds I create. If you want to see some of the others, click here.
Captives, my new young adult dystopian novel, is releasing April 2, 2013. To celebrate, I’m releasing something new each week. Today, it’s the map from the front of the book. I’m also giving away one advance reader copy per week until release day.
So, first allow me to choose the winner from last week’s entries. Drum roll please?
And the winner is: Emma E.
Congrats, Emma! For those of you who didn’t win, you’re welcome to enter this week’s drawing!
Here’s the map I drew for The Safe Lands. It takes place in what was the former ski resort of Mount Crested Butte, Colorado. Click on the map to see it closer up.
To enter to win this week’s advance reader copy of Captives, leave a comment telling me what map is your favorite from books, TV, or movies. Mine, I think, is Middle Earth, though the Maurauder’s Map is a close second. I love those little moving footprints.
Katelyn Shear says
I would love, love, LOVE to win!

Jill Williamson says
Tell me what map you like, Katelyn! lol
🙂
Katelyn Shear says
My favorite sci-fi (ish) TV show is Revolution. It’s more Dystopian than sci-fi, but I love it just the same.
Jennette says
Sounds intriguing! I have to agree, Middle Earth is my favorite too, although I like Earthsea and The Sword of Shannara’s maps as well.
How did you draw this? On the computer, by hand, both? It looks great!
Jill Williamson says
Thanks, Jennette! I drew it by hand at first with a thin Sharpie. Then I scanned it in and copy and pasted the trees. I think I only drew, like, four or five trees.
Katelyn Shear says
My favorite sci-fi map would probably be the one I made for my story. It took me two days to make that thing, and it was still horrible. But I love it for some reason. (FINALLY GOT THE QUESTION RIGHT.)
Jill Williamson says
LOL
Yay! You drew a map!
Cheri Schueller says
It would have to be from Lord of the Rings or the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey or Narnia. Hmmm. Do I have to pick just one??
Jill Williamson says
Nope. You can love them all, Cheri!
Glenda Alexander says
Would love to win, and Love the Map!!!
Jill Williamson says
Thanks, Glenda!
Kara Grant says
Congrats to Emma on winning and thank you Jill for this awesome giveaway!! Captives looks like another must have for my bookshelves 🙂
Wow, LOOOOVE your map, Jill, utterly detailed and nicely put together!!
The best map I could think of was Middle Earth, that one was also very helpful to the story and filled with impressive details.
Blessings, Kara
Jill Williamson says
I have a poster of Middle Earth on my wall. 🙂
kim says
I think I like your map! I get my own ‘maps’ in my head when I read a book, so it’s kinda cool that you actually draw them out for us.
Jill Williamson says
Thanks, Kim! I love drawing them. It’s super time consuming, but so much fun.
Emma Engel says
I obviously am not entering this raffle, but loved the question and wanted to say thanks to Jill for the book! While I love the large colored maps of Middle-earth and Narnia (and have had them on my walls from time to time) the first map that captured my heart was actually the Hobbit map. The copy I read as a child had the map as an insert in the back, and I used to take it out and carry it and old key I found around “just in case.” I love the black and white, single focus, completely hand drawn feel of it. So I definitely love Jill’s map since it fits all those!
Jill Williamson says
You’re welcome! 🙂
I love the Hobbit map too! And I love charting out the Hobbit journey on the big Middle Earth map.
Susan P says
Yup, Middle Earth here! I just LOVE looking at it.
Jill Williamson says
Me too, Susan.
Emily Rachelle says
I haven’t actually read much fantasy, but I love Shannon Hale’s maps in the Books of Bayern series.
Jill Williamson says
I need to read more Shannon Hale.
Charlotte says
I do like maps with books. It helps me with following the story. I haven’t a favorite but I do like the one you have posted today.
Jill Williamson says
Thanks, Charlotte!
Rebekah Gyger says
My favorite map is in Donita K. Paul’s Dragon Keeper series.
Jill Williamson says
Love that one, Rebekah! 🙂
amccalli says
My favorite fantasy map is the Marauder’s Map.
I like that’s its interactive and that it took a lot of imagination to come up with it I am sure.
Jill Williamson says
The Marauder’s Map rocks!
Lois Hudson says
I draw maps for all my fictional settings – helps me keep track of directions and distances, as well as visualize the action. (I like real maps too. Spend a lot of time on Mapquest – earth view.)
I liked the map in SHARDIK by Richard Adams – an old one to be sure, but neat.
I, too, would love to win!
hudson5107@att.net
Jill Williamson says
I’ve never read that book, Lois. What’s it about?
Hannah Peasha says
I really like Wayne Batson’s map from The Door Within. It helped me picture where everything was a lot easier 🙂 And your map is great too!
Jill Williamson says
Thanks, Hannah! I like Wayne’s map too. 🙂
Deborah S. Dahnim says
Is it possible I remember seeing this map a very long time ago? It just looks so familiar… I can’t believe you drew that–it’s so good and professional and just… yeah! Wow.
My favorite maps are ones that a friend of mine makes for her novels… But my favorite published one is definitely for Middle-earth. I have one on my wall too. 🙂
Jill Williamson says
Yes, I posted a version of it when I first drew it. 🙂
Karen says
Middle Earth is one of my favourites as well. I also really like Cornelia Funke’s map of her world in Inkdeath. 🙂
Jill Williamson says
I haven’t seen the Inkdeath map, Karen. I’ll have to look it up.
Brian McBride says
I would LOVE to win! I think that my favorite map is probably from the Lord of the Rings. It is so thorough and there are so many pages of details of the map. And… I love LOTR. 😀
Jill Williamson says
I love LOTR too, Brian. 🙂
Sarah says
Hmm. I love the map of Middle Earth (which I have on my wall across from my bed), and the map from The Hobbit. But the map of The Realm from The Door Within Trilogy by Wayne Thomas Batson is awesome too.
Lovely map, by the way!
Jill Williamson says
That is a good one, Sarah! Love Door Within!
Nadine Brandes says
I have three answers to this:
The Marauder’s Map because of the concept
Middle Earth because of the epic drawings and, well, epicness…
And the Map of Er’Rets from your Blood of Kings Series because it’s the one I actually USE the most when reading (not brown-nosing, just telling it how it is!)
And the map for Captives looks awesome. I especially like the windmills.
Jill Williamson says
LOL! Thanks, Nadine. 🙂
Cortney C. says
Well… I would have to say that my favorite map is the map of Alagaesia from Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance cycle.
Cynthia Marcano says
Definitely Middle Earth. HUGE LOTR Fan.
Elizabeth L. W. says
Whoa! Great map! I cannot draw even if my life depended on it! I’ve looked for some map generators for my own storyworld, but it never comes out exactly how I picture it in my head. I have to make maps in history class. *cringe* Needless to say they don’t always look like they are supposed to. 😛
Hmmm, my favorite map… well, of course all the maps Tolkien has for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (The Hobbit being a special favorite), but Narnia comes at a close second. I also like Wayne Thomas Batson’s map in The Door Within Trilogy, very cool. There are lots more but because I don’t have my bookshelf in front of me, my mind is drawing a blank… That’s always how it works isn’t it? 😛
I’ve always liked looking at maps, tactical battle maps in particular, they’re the best! 😀
Jill Williamson says
I like those maps, too, Elizabeth! And I have a book on battle maps from the middle ages that’s really fun.
