Hi, Jill, I just saw King’s War in a book store today. I was surprised at how thick it was! I was just wondering, what was the word count of that particular book? My own book is close to 200,000 words, and I have been trying to cut down on the size because I’ve heard publishers don’t like long books. Thanks!
I think, after major edits, King’s War ended up being about 230k. And I can confirm that Christian market publishers do not want books this long. Bethany House had to raise the price of book three to compensate for my long-windedness. LOL! The reason I got away with such long books was because of the experiment we did in releasing the books in ebook parts. That made it nearly impossible to stick to an exact word count, especially considering the epic fantasy genre with so many points of view. So don’t take my book as the norm. It’s a rare exception. Now, if you’re writing for the general market and a publisher that publishes epic fantasy for adults on a regular basis (like Tor), I’ve heard that a good cap for a first-time author is around 180k. So it depends who you are pitching your book to.
